Daily Nannies are the most common choice for childcare in your own
home. They are also usually the most expensive option. However, the
cost reflects exactly what you will be receiving in terms of quality
childcare.
A daily nanny will come to your house at the specified time in the
morning, and leave again when you get home from work. He/she will
usually be a fully qualified and/or experienced nanny.
Examples of qualifications would be
- NNEB (Diploma in Nursery Nursing) + Norland
- BTEC (National Diploma in Childhood studies)
- NVQ 3 (National vocational qualification level 3)
|
|
Their duties will involve child related
Nursery Duties.
- To provide a safe and caring environment for your child(ren)
- To stimulate your children’s physical, intellectual, emotional
and social development.
- The organisation and supervision of children’s social
activities – visits to the park, toy libraries, play centres,
swimming pools etc.
- To be able to produce and cook a well balanced meal.
- To manage the children’s rooms, laundry, clothing and
toys.
- The ability to administer First Aid.
- To provide educational stimulation in reading, writing
and number work according to the children’s age.

You could expect a "starter nanny" - i.e. a newly
qualified NNEB straight out of college - to command a lower
wage than one with several years experience.
Qualified and Experienced Nannies £160 - £320 per week
Qualified first job £145 + per week
Some employers find that employing the nanny to live in is an
easier option, particularly if they leave relatively early in
the morning. His/her wages will reflect the fact that he/she
is living in your house, and using the house amenities. Some
people find it difficult to adjust to having another adult living
in their house, and this should be taken into consideration.
He/she will also require their own room and often his/her own
bathroom.
The live-in nanny’s role and responsibilities will be more or
less the same as the Daily Nanny, however, he/she will also
be responsible for keeping his/her own areas clean and tidy
and may even provide free baby-sitting. You must ensure that
you discuss your expectations in advance, or living with the
nanny could become difficult. Communication is essential for
all nanny/employer relationships.
Their qualifications would be the same as the daily nanny.
Live -in Nannies £140 - £280 per week
If the cost of hiring a nanny is too much for you, another option
is a shared nanny.
The nanny will care for the children of two families, and they
split the cost of employing him/her. However, the nanny’s time
with each family should be shared, or else all the children
will need to be cared for in one house. These arrangements will
be decided between the two families. As with a live-in nanny,
your expectations must be made clear. Otherwise friction could
occur, not only between nanny and employer, but also between
the sharing families.
The salary would need to be agreed between both families and
the Nanny. Again this would depend on her qualifications and
experience.
A temporary nanny is the ideal option for emergencies. She
will be an experienced and qualified nanny, who is confident
and
used to being placed in new situations. The Cost will be based
on an hourly rate and is between £5.00 - £7.00
Mother’s Helps are a slightly cheaper option than nannies, and
they are responsible for light household duties. However, although
they are experienced, they are not usually trained.
After a certain amount of experience, a mother’s help will often
‘graduate’ on to become a nanny. This would involve toning down
his/her housework duties and increasing their childcare duties.
Their wages would also increase. Examples
of Qualifications:
- CCE (certificate in Child Care and Education)
- NVQ 2 (National Vocational Qualification level 2)
Their duties would involve
- Helping to dress/ feed/ bath the children
- Playing and stimulating the children
- Taking and collecting the children from school and nursery
- Light, general housework
- Grocery shopping
- Helping to prepare family meals.
Mother’s Help (unqualified) £130 - £190 per week
Mother’s Help with experience £140 - £210 per week
